Assignment No. 5: Developing Your Argument

For this assignment, we’re going to skip ahead a bit (compared to what is on the syllabus). There are several basic tasks.

First, read chapter 4 in Harrison ("Analysing Offical Data For Political Research) and chapters 6 and 7 in Redman ("Writing Introductions" and "Writing the Main Section"). You have already read chapter 6, so really you are just reviewing this chapter.

Second, look for and identify at least three additional sources of "official data" for your research paper. These sources MUST be different from the evidence and sources you used earlier in the quarter.

Third, REWRITE the introduction to your paper according to the criteria for a "full" introduction discussed on page 47 in the Redman book. In addition to your introduction, provide an OUTLINE of the main section of your research paper. Your outline must, at a minimum, contain headings for each of the sections you anticipate including in your paper, plus a short narrative of the contents of each section (the narrative for each section should be no more than 100 words (as point of reference, this paragraph is exactly 90 words).

*In outlining your main section, make sure to follow the guidelines discussed by Redman in chapter seven, the most important of which is that your argument have a "logical progression." This means you must: (1) establish a position; (2) give reasons why your position might be correct; and (3) provide empirical evidence to support your position.

*In addition, you must attempt to write from "within" a theoretical position (see pages 56-59 in the Redman book for discussion of this issue).

*It is also important that you begin thinking very seriously and carefully about how to connect your argument to the study of political science. At the most basic and general level this means considering how questions of power relate to your argument.

*Cite all your sources using the CHICAGO style. YOU MUST FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES EXACT;U.

As usual, you must also carefully and rigorously follow all the instructions above. Failure to complete or address any of the foregoing steps (and any requirements listed in this section) will result in a score NO HIGHER THAN 14.0 POINTS (a "C"). Failure to complete or address two or more requirements will a score of 10.0 points or less. I EXPECT ALL PAPERS TO REFLECT SERIOUS THOUGHT AND EFFORT. I will automatically fail any paper that is sloppy and/or clearly slapped together with minimal effort.

In addition, as with all your papers, you must neatly type and double-space your response. Use standard margins (no less than 1" top, bottom, left and right; and no more than 1.25" ). Your hard copy is due in class on Monday, Feb. 9.

Post your assignment on the class message board. All assignments must be posted in one place—DO NOT POST YOUR ASSIGNMENT AS A "NEW MESSAGE."

Carefully proofread your assignment. I will deduct automatically 3.0 points if I count more than 5 simply errors (including all the types of errors we discussed in our last class session).

ANY QUESTIONS MUST BE POSTED ON THE CLASS MESSAGE BOARD. A HARD COPY OF THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE ON MONDAY, FEB. 23 IN CLASS.
