[From the syllabus] It is becoming increasingly important for us to understand the world—all parts of the world. One reason is clear: more than ever, events, processes and issues in one part of the world are taking on global significance; at the same time, globalized processes are impacting and profoundly shaping the lives of all peoples. To understand the changes going on in the world today—and to understand how to bring about change in the world, for those of us so inclined—requires both action and thought. With this in mind, overarching objective of this class is to help you develop the basis for effective "thought." That is, this class is designed to help you interpret, understand, and/or explain issues, events or processes of political significance both among and within a broad range of countries. This is not an easy task. For it requires you to learn about a broad of range of issues, concepts, and theories. It also requires you to think with an open, but critical and analytical mind. This said, learning how to better understand, interpret or explain the world is within the grasp of virtually anyone. All it takes is a willingness and commitment to learn.
