At the most general level, this seminar is intended to serve as a broad, graduate-level introduction to the study comparative politics. While introductory, this course is also advanced in that we will cover a lot of unfamiliar and often abstract material very quickly, much of which you are expected to digest and learn on your own. As an advanced course, moreover, all students are already expected to have a firm grasp of the research process and of the conventions of acceptable academic writing and analysis. Second, as an advanced course, students are expected to have a basic grounding in comparative methodology and theory. Minimally, this means (1) recognizing what comparative analysis is and how it is used to study political phenomena; and (2) understanding the importance and utility of different theoretical approaches or research traditions.
