[NOTE: Order of suggested readings begins with latest class sessions] Soft Power | Our discussion of the liberal perspective included Joseph's Nye's short article on "The Decline of Soft Power." For those of you interested, you may want to check out an interview with Nye discussing this concept in greater depth. It's available on the web site of the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs. "We think the price is worth it" | This web page, part of the Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) website, contains a brief article discussing Madeline Albright's comments on the estimated 500,000 Iraqi civilians who died (the figure cited is generally accepted, but not completely reliable) as result of sanctions imposed against the Hussein regime after the end of the first Gulf War. Iraq Body Count | An independent and comprehensive public database of media-reported civilian deaths in Iraq resulting directly from military action by the USA and its allies in 2003. In the current occupation phase the database includes all deaths which the Occupying Authority has a binding responsibility to prevent under the Geneva Conventions and Hague Regulations. This includes civilian deaths resulting from the breakdown in law and order, and deaths due to inadequate health care or sanitation. |
