<p><span class=3DSpellE>Radiosonde</span> data can be employed in a variety=
 of
ways to provide meteorologists with powerful analytical tools. Data at vari=
ous
atmospheric levels above a station can be plotted in the <span class=3DSpel=
lE>radiosonde</span>
profile on the <span class=3DSpellE>St&uuml;ve</span> diagram that we exami=
ned in
Investigation 2B. Here we consider atmospheric temperature and pressure con=
ditions
above two stations about 1500 km apart. <span class=3DSpellE>Radiosonde</sp=
an>
observations at 0000Z 7 October 2009 (<i>091007/0000</i>) from Atlanta (FFC=
), <st1:country-region
w:st=3D"on">Georgia</st1:country-region>, and Minneapolis (MPX), <st1:State
w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Minnesota</st1:place></st1:State>, depic=
ting the
<span class=3DSpellE>tropospheric</span> conditions over those stations are
plotted on <span class=3DSpellE>St&uuml;ve</span> diagrams shown in <a
href=3D"http://instructional1.calstatela.edu/sladoch/geog170/wk5-f09/wk5/f0=

y> was
reporting a temperature of 70 &deg;F while <st1:City w:st=3D"on"><st1:place
 w:st=3D"on">Minneapolis</st1:place></st1:City> was 44 &deg;F. As seen on t=
he
surface map, a strong cold front was passing eastward and was between the t=
wo

&quot;mandatory&quot; levels reported in each station's sounding plus the
surface. The surface pressures differed somewhat (partially due to their
altitude differences) and are listed as the first (lowest) entries. The data
are presented with the highest pressures at the bottom as is found in the o=
pen
atmosphere. </p>

It is characteristic that lower latitude stations have colder temperatures =
at
the boundary of the troposphere and stratosphere (<span class=3DSpellE>trop=

t 320 <span
class=3DSpellE>mb</span>. The depth of the troposphere (surface to <span
class=3DSpellE>tropopause</span>) is termed &quot;thickness&quot; and is re=
lated
to the average temperature of the air column. The troposphere was
&quot;thicker&quot; over <b>[(<st1:City w:st=3D"on"><i><u>Minneapolis</u></=
i></st1:City><span
class=3DGramE>)(</span><st1:City w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on"><i><u>A=
tlanta</u></i></st1:place></st1:City>)]</b>
where the average temperature in the troposphere was generally greater.</p>

<p>Changes in <span class=3DSpellE>tropospheric</span> conditions above a s=

with passing weather systems can also be tracked with <span class=3DSpellE>=

diagrams. This is one example of the influence of a strong passing cold fro=
