Office: BS 235 The best way for students to learn science is by doing science. My educational approach emphasizes student participation, research, and peer teaching. These methods allow the learning process to be driven by the student's own curiosity, interests, and sense of accomplishment. My research efforts are focused on population genetics, molecular ecology, and evolution of marine mammals. My scientific contributions are characterized by a combination of molecular, computational, and field approaches. I am particularly interested in developing a research program that follows an integrated approach to the study of marine mammals at the individual, social, population, and higher taxonomic levels, as well as the application of the results to the effective management and conservation of endangered stocks.
