INTRODUCTION
For the last six years I have held a position as an elementary school teacher. I have taught kindergarten and third grade students. I have taught bilingual students in Spanish as well as Model B classes, which are first, second or third year second language learners. Both have been a great and rewarding challenge.
Teaching second language learners is a challenge because every year the makeup of a class is not the same. It may be that in one classroom, students' English Language Development (ELD) levels make up a great range or that most of the students in this population lack the crucial background knowledge to the cognitively demanding academic disciplines students are required to know. For these reasons, and numerous others, sheltered English plays a crucial role in their social and academic development.
TEACHING INTERESTS
I am currently working toward my M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Cal State L.A. After I complete my degree, I plan to begin teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult second language learners. I also plan to become part of a team or create one that teaches parents strategies on how to work with their children on homework, school projects or just studying. I believe that our first teacher's are our parents and that the weight that they put into a child's education makes a world of difference in the child's attitude and motivation in school. Parents should have the skills to show their children how to go about working on a project, or how to do his/her homework.
