1. Choose ONE of the following scenarios and discuss what you would expect to find after 3 days, six months, two years, and five years. In all cases, the decedent is a young adult male in excellent physical condition (lots of muscle mass), approximately 210 lbs, 6'3" tall, with multiple penetrating wounds to the chest, back, throat, arms and legs. In all cases, the body was first recovered yesterday, March 9, 1998. Be as detailed as possible (20 pts.)


A. The body is located in the Mojave desert, in a shallow grave (approximately 1' below the surface) on the salt plain.

B. The body is located in a plastic garbage bag, in pieces (thorax, head, arms, legs) on the surface in the Angeles Forest at approximately 2,300' above sea level.

C. The body is located in a dumpster in downtown Los Angeles (if not found, will be relocated to the dump).

D. The body is located attached to a pylon under approximately 6' of ocean water in Marina del Rey.

E. The body is located in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle in a remote section of Eaton Canyon, outside Pasadena.


2. Choose ONE Of the following and discuss in detail. Include information on the role of the forensic anthropologist, who else might be involved, and the pros and cons of such work (20 pts):

A. The use of forensic anthropologists in mass disasters

B. The use of forensic anthropologists in human rights work


3. Discuss the potential use and abuse of facial reconstruction in personal identification work, citing case examples when possible (10 pts.).
