The Forehand Grip
(1) Fingers properly
wrapped on handle using appropriate tightness
(2) Racket
face is leaning to the left (right-handed player) when using the
Western Forehand Grip.
(3) Heel of racket facing belly botton
(4) The
"V" is at the proper position on top of handle
The Forehand Set Stance
(5)
Face the net with heels at or slightly above shoulder width
Note that Phoebe Bachofer, Cal State LA Tennis Team Member Fall, 2003, uses a fairly wide set stance.
Accomplished players often display a wide range of styles which may not fit the learning needs of a beginner.
(6) Lean forward, knees slightly flexed,
weight forward on balls of feet
(7) Hold racket head at proper height above wrist
(8)
Point racket head streight
The Forehand Backswing
(9) Step across and forward with left foot
(10) Turn body as racket is pulled back
(11) Hold wrist slightly back and locked
(12) Keep elbow bent and not too far from trunk
(13) Keep racket head slightly below waist height
(14)
Do not pull racket head too far back
The Forehand Forward Swing
(15) Get ready early with proper footwork and backswing
(16) Turn body as racket swings forward
(17) maintain appropriate tension in swinging arm
(18) Contact ball in front and to the right side of body
(19) Keep your eyes on ball
(20) Lock your wrist
(21) Keep swing leveled and hit through the ball and up as you follow-through
(22) Follow-through with leveled shoulders and hips facing the net
(23) Promptly recover back to Set Stance
