Unit II (pp. 19-57)

Sport, Power, and Ideology

Unit II "illustrates the functions, power, and influence of sports on values, attitudes, behaviors, and cultural practices, and their manifestations in interpersonal and gender relations, especially in the reproduction of class, gender, and racial inequality. Further, it demonstrates how, under given conditions, certain sport environments serve as arenas for social resistance to oppressive ideologies and practices (Yiannakis & Melnick, 2001, p. 19)."

  • 'Cultural Studies' : "At base, cultural studies critiques and challenges existing norms and practices and examines how these practices affect people in their everyday lives. Although cultural studies has been difficult to define, most cultural studies projects deal with the interrelated issues of social difference, the distribution of power, and social justice."

  • " Systematic sampling" strategies take every Nth person from the sampling frame. For example, you choose a random start page and take every 45th name in the directory until you have the desired sample size. Its major advantage is that it is much less cumbersome to use than the procedures outlined for simple random sampling."

  • What does Cronbach's alpha (alpha-reliability) mean?

Cronbach's alpha measures how well a set of items (or variables) measures a single unidimensional latent construct. When data have a multidimensional structure, Cronbach's alpha will usually be low. Technically speaking, Cronbach's alpha is not a statistical test - it is a coefficient of reliability (or consistency).

  • Homosexuality is not sinful.
