Study Questions and Activities for Chapter I
- What is the text's author's definition of sport and exercise psychology?
- Some of the many women that left an early mark on the field of sport psychology are Dorothy Harris, Eleanor Metheny, Camille Brown, Celeste Ulrich,
and Aileen Lockhart. Visit the Cal State LA library to find out information about the specific work and contributions to our discipline
by any two women on the above list.
- Visit the Cal State LA library and read through any 2006 or 2007 issue of a professional journal that is
completely or partially dedicated to the discipline of sport psychology. Select one article that you find most interesting and
bring a copy of its abstract to class.
- As matters stand at this junction in time, who, according to our text's author, may call her/himself a sport
psychologist? (For supplemental information visit the
Careers in Sports Psychology webpage.)
- How do the terms "race thinking" and "racist thinking" differ? Provide one example for each term.
- Explain the difference between the "universalistic model" and the "compatibility model" in addressing the needs of
a multicultural society. Which model, if any, is regarded as most appropriate by your text's author?
- Recalling your high school experience in physical education classes, does the
Morrow & Gill (2003) study ring true
with regard to the great disparity between teachers' perception and students' perception of a psychologically "safe
environment" for the students by the teachers?
