  2. What evidence indicates that the ancient Greek Olympians were not amateurs? Where did the idea of amateurism originate from and what beliefs led to the description of the ancient Olympics as a contest among amateurs?
  3. How do the views of "physical education through the physical" and "physical education of the physical differ? Which view represents your philosophy of teaching in physical education? Explain.
  4. In what ways are ancient Roman sports similar to sports in the United States today? In what ways do Roman sports differ from current sports in America?
  5. Can gladiator combats be considered as "big business?" To what extent did women compete as gladiators? What were the reasons for the demise of gladiatorial combats and other mass spectacles of the Roman Empire?
  6. Describe the various sports and ball games played during the Middle Ages. Which social group participated and what did they gain from their efforts?
  7. Who in the church was in favor of physical activity? Were there any in the church who were against physical activity and sports? What were their reasons? What was the connection between the tournaments and the Crusades?
  8. How did the times of the renaissance differ from fife during the Middle Ages? Did this difference affect education, sport, and physical education?
  9. What types of sports and physical activities were popular during the periods of the renaissance and reformation? To what extent are these activities still popular to this day?
