I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introduction to the application of personal computers in kinesiology and physical education. A strong emphasis is placed on the delivery of discipline related content through available computing technology. In addition, students will become familiar with current discipline specific software. Issues presented by computers in kinesiology and society will be explored.

II. PREREQUISITES: Basic personal computer skills.

III. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the course students will:

  • become familiar with computer terminology, and hardware and software fundamentals
  • be able to evaluate hardware and software needed for future personal and professional computing
  • effectively use a variety of common computer (e.g., wordprocessing, spreadsheet, presentation, etc.), and discipline specific application software (e.g., fitness, nutrition, motor skills acquisition, teacher performance, and student learning)
  • find and critically examine discipline related resources available on the Internet
  • master HTML basics and create a personal web portfolio
  • be able to deliver on-line discipline related content via free educational web sites
  • use second generation distance learning and multimedia technology for content delivery
  • know the responsibilities and ethical issues involved in modern computing with specific attention to public and personal database privacy

V. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Cal State LA: Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities

  • Attendance, punctuality, and active participation in class and lab sessions is expected. Students are responsible for class or additional reading materials whether present or not during actual lecture or lab sessions. Since each lab is evaluated individually missed labs will be deducted from the total lab grade. Late assignments and papers will be penalized. There will be no make-ups for unannounced quizzes.

SUPPLIES:

You need to bring to class a 64 MB USB drive or larger. See table below for information regarding the USB drive size you need (adapted from iomega.com)

Note that the storage capacity of USB drives is constantly evolving while the price per gigabyte (GB) of storage space is declining sharply. Thus, first shop around prior to buying a USB drive.

VI. ASSIGNMENTS:
Complete the following assignments:

  • using the wordprocessor of your choice, prepare: (1) a personal resume (curriculum vitae--due the third Tuesday of the quarter.) (2) a physical education, coaching, or exercise science related informational brochure, and (3) a handout supplement for a fitness/wellness related topic lecture
  • Using MS PPT, prepare and be ready to deliver a 10 minute professional presentation covering a current kinesiology related topic
  • Using MS Excel, prepare computations for classroom grade book keeping, and a variety of health-related fitness tests
  • Using a text or HTML editor, develop a personal web folio
  • Prepare a critical report assessing discipline related content on the Web
  • Write a review of a kinesiology specific application software of your choice
