I. TENNIS PORTION COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introductory course teaching the fundamental skills of tennis. Basic strokes; the forehand and the backhand drives, the flat serve, volley, lob, and smash; history, rules, scoring, and court etiquette. Basic singles and doubles court play and game strategies. In addition, warm-up and cool-down procedures, as well as conditioning and nutrition for sport participation will be covered. Academic credit: 1.0 credits.
II. PREREQUISITE: None.
III. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
  • At the completion of the course students will:
  • demonstrate intermediate to advanced beginner level skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of tennis.
  • get exposed to singles and doubles play and strategies
  • develop body control and kinesthetic awareness through basic tennis skills .
  • become familiar with the history of tennis, game and etiquette rules, and the scoring system.
  • be able to utilize tennis skills as a carryover activity for all-around life-long physical activity.

B. COURSE FORMAT AND REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:

    Lecture/discussion, and activity sessions. PROPER ATTIRE IS A MUST FOR ON COURT SESSIONS!
V. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Attendance, punctuality, and active participation in lecture and on court sessions is expected. Students are responsible for class or additional reading materials whether present or not during actual lecture or skills sessions. Since each skills session is evaluated individually missed sessions will be deducted from the total skills sessions' grade. Late assignments and papers will be penalized. There will be no make-ups for unannounced quizzes.

Class Format: Oral presentation, general & specific warm-up, review drills, daily topic, games, cool-down, and questions and answers.

Equipment & Clothing: Students must provide their own racquet and two UNOPENED cans of tennis balls (3 balls per can). Athletic type tennis shoes are also required. For safety reasons, those not properly attired will not be allowed to participate.

Miscellaneous:
  • On rainy days class shall meet in the Physical Education building, Gymn. 214.
  • Medical problems: see instructor immediately.

Prepare a list of tennis skills you need to improve and provide suggestions for possible skill interventions.
