At the same time the Aztecs tried to enhance their status by gaining permission to marry Colhuacan women, who were of Toltec descent, Achitometl even gave one of his own daughters to an Aztec leader. But the girl was sacrificed during one of the rituals, and this so incensed the Colhuacanos that they forced the Aztecs to flee and take refuge in the reeds and marches of Lake Texcoco, on some swampy lands belonging to Tezozomoc, ruler of Azcapotzalco; since these bordered other chiefdoms and were undesirable islands they had left unoccupied.
