The Codex of Azcatitlan represents the first temple (The Great Temple of the Aztecs) and the foundation of Tenochtitlan. The Codex representation on the top of the Great Temple depicts a sacrificed man from which is being born, through the uterus of the temple, a prickly pear tree that symbolizes the "World Tree" and the primordial earth.
