The entrance to the monastery is through a small courtyard. On one of the walls that surround this courtyard there are several inscriptions in Nahuatl and Spanish. The most interesting ones show the legend: D. Penalosa Iullio Ano (1569) and its correspondent Nahuatl calendaric glyph "Twelve House" or 12 Calli which signify the date of 1569, that is possibly the date of edification of the monastic complex.
