We find an impressive relief of the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows represented by seven swords that stab her heart. Next to the hilt of the swords, there are stone disks with an empty cavity that possibly contained obsidian or jade flat stones, like the ones the Indians put in their idols to represent their vital energy. We, in fact, find these obsidian disks in atrial crosses like Tajimaroa (Ciudad Hidalgo) and San Felipe de los Alzati in the state of Michoacan. Moreno Villa considers that this is in reality the Virgin of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. He found in the Museum of Vich in Barcelona, a Romanesque image of the Virgin that is surrounded by seven disks that contain doves, representing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Based on the iconographic similarity of the images, he suggests that in the cavities of the disks of Calpan should have been images of doves that are lost today.
