In the spandrels of the arch there are Romanesque-like passionary angels; the one on the left identified as St. Michael carries the crown of thorns and the pliers, and the one on the right bears the three nails. In the center, there is the Franciscan emblem of the Stigmata. On top in the corners there are two figures. The one on the left is St. Francis kneeling in ecstasy, receiving the Stigmata from the cross located in the apex of the squarish dome that has in its angles knotted Franciscan cords and in its center Greek monograms of Christ. The figure on the right is according to Garcia Granados (1940) either the encomendero of Calpan Diego de Ordaz Villagomez or the very King Phillip II, because the prominent position the personage has in the scene, as a donor in perpetual adoration.
