The atrium is elevated by the west gate, formed by three arches. The atrium was built over a former Indian platform and has a quartet of posa chapels that is one of the few that remain intact in Mexico. They are capped by a distinctive pyramidal roof and have a complex sculptural program designed to link the Christian history with the Franscican order. All the facades have a common format carved with tequitqui technique of flat relief and beveling, but they have different iconographic motifs depending on the passionary angels.
