| This open chapel, was formed by a grid of nine by seven corridors creating a dense forest of columns; a magnificent hypostyle hall. It is clear that the model for this was the amazing mosque of Cordoba in Spain, where even their multi-altered facades still show the similarity. The chapel was the oldest part of the Christian establishment in Cholula that was settled in the plaza nearby the great temple of Quetzalcoatl. It explains how the process of substitution of shrines maintained the meaning and sanctity of the place for the native community. |
