The Codice Franciscano says it was under construction in 1569 and Ponce stayed there in 1585. Over the doorway that gives access to the cloister is a painting that shows the genealogical tree of the Franciscans. From the chest of St. Francis emerges the three in whose branches appear the most important saints of the Order. This iconography that has its European origins in the Biblical "Tree of Jesse" was compatible with the Mesoamerican concept of the World Tree or tree of Life. An example of this is the Mixtec Tree of Life of Apoala that appears in the Codex Vindobonensis.
