ACOLMAN (Arm and Shoulder)
The name of the town seems to have originated in the Tezcocan legend narrated by Mendieta (1971: 8 1) that supposedly happened there. According to the account, the sun shot an arrow into the earth, and from the hole left where it struck, the first man ever to inhabit the earth emerged; this first man had no body, only a head, shoulders, and arms; therefore, they called him Aculmaill, which means "Shoulder with Hand or Arm." From this story, the "place of aculmaitl" was named Acolman (Penafiel 1885; Robelo 1974).
