| This two pictures show the exterior and interior of the Fortress of San Juan de Ulua in the port of Veracruz that was founded in 1519 by Hernan Cortes. During colonial times it was the most important and sheltered harbor in New Spain. Temporary palisades were built almost immediately after the city was founded. These were soon replaced with a masonry fort on an islet, now connected to the mainland by a paved road. It became known as San Juan de Ulua. In 1590, King Philip II had his military architect, Bautista Antonelli, devise plans for additional fortifications which were executed shortly, thereafter. Today this spellbinding gigantic fortress is open to the public. |
