Cerebral location of the senses and mental abilities (intellect)

The illustration above is a schematic representation (by Valades) of the main cerebral regions which are of extreme importance for knowledge acquisition. The concept of understanding human beings and their environment was crucial in the New World. Missionaries, preachers or religious leaders had to be prepared to analyze all aspects of human behaviors. Fray Diego de Valades firmly believed that a perfect preacher needed to have three principal qualities: invention, speech and pronunciation. Inventive, so he could find solutions for the best way of converting people to Christianity. Speech and pronunciation so he could be a good speaker and avoid misleading information that could cause controversy.
