He was the son of Diego Valades, the conqueror who arrived with Cortez to the New World, and a Tlaxcaltecan Indian woman. Fray Diego De Valades beccame a Franciscan missionary and humanist with many active roles in The New Spain. Accomplishing several illustrious books, the humanist Franciscan had the honor to be 'The First Mexican' writer who managed to publish and print his own book (Rhetorica Christiana, 1579) in Europe.

The image shown above is the front cover (title page) of Rhetorica Christiana printed in 1579, written by Valades. This page is fully illustrated and the depiction of strong religious subject matter is obvious. The cover serves as an introduction to the text. It contains accreditations of high authorities (of the specific time, 1579), who made possible the completion of Rhetorica Christiana.
