The Aztec facial ideal may be seen in a number of heads and masks. The typical face is broad: the low forehead is defined by the smooth hairline fitting like a cap. The eyes, often inlaid with shell, state forward with no cover by upper eyelids. The lips are parted, with sometimes a row of inlaid teeth. The open mouth and staring eyes convey life and vitality.
