The evil older sister of Huitzilopochtli and the Centzon Huitznahua, Coyolxauhqui was one of the major goddesses of Aztec mythology. Furious over the pregnancy of Coatlicue (her mother), Coyolxauhqui slew her mother with the aid of her 400 brothers, the Centzon Hiutznahua. The dying Coatlicue gave birth to Huitzilopochtli, who , armed with his Xiuhcoatl weapon, dismembered Coyolxauhqui and routed the Centzon Huitznahua at the hill of Coatepec. According to the Florentine Codex accounts of this battle, the severed remains of Coyolxauhqui tumbled to the base of Coatepec.
