The standard-bearer sculptures were found reclining against the stairway of the Stage III of the Great Temple leading to Huitzilopochtli’s shrine. It was thought that the figures may represent Huitzilopochtli’s mythical brothers, the Centzo Huitznahua (the 400 stars), who fought a battle with him on Coatepec (the Serpent Mountain).
