After the momentous events at Coatepec the Aztecs arrived at Tula around 1165 A.D. , the year in which that city was destroyed, and so it is likely that they played a part in its collapse. Later they continued towards the Valley of Mexico. The fact that they roamed from one place to another, probably being forcibly resettled, seems to indicate that the whole of central Mexico was organized into different chiefhoods already in control of the land, and because of this the Aztecs were obliged to become subject to the chieftain who dominated each region. This is what happened when they came to Colhuacan, governed by Achitometl; he allowed them to settle on the outlying lands of Tizapan and, in exchange, they had to pay tribute in the form of canoes and labor, fighting as mercenaries in Achitometl ‘s wars of expansion.
