The Aztecs oriented Tenochtitlan’s Templo Mayor or Huey Teocalli to the four quarters of the universe, and conceived of it as the central point between the 13 levels of Heaven and the 9 steps to the Underworld. The Aztec Templo Mayor dual pyramid, situated in the center of Tenochititan, represented two sacred mountains, Coatepec and Tonacatepetl.
