Tenochtitlan was a magnificent, bustling city of perhaps a quarter of a million souls. Standing at its center was a huge ceremonial precinct, itself overshadowed by the Great Temple dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and the Rain God, Tlaloc. The Great Temple was the symbolic as well as the physical center of the Aztec universe, and two centuries of imperial expansion had seen the edifice enlarged and rebuilt many times.
