From Historia Tolteca-Chichimeca. 1550.
Chicomoztoc was the legendary place of origin for many Nahuatl-speaking groups who left the caves at different times. The Mexicas were the last to leave. Attempts have been made to locate Aztlan or Chicomoztoc in northwestern Mexico, but without success, and perhaps both are purely mythical. The importance of Chicomoztoc was as a place of religious renewal, where people are "reborn" with a connection to the primordial forces of life, or where new leaders might be installed in office through a rite of passage.
