The Post Classic era saw a greatly heightened emphasis on militarism, in fact, a glorification of war in all its aspects. Wars were the rule of the day and those unfortunate enough to be captured were destined for sacrifice to the gods. Human sacrifice can hardly be considered a new element in Mesoamerican life, but in Tula, for the first time, we have widespread evidence for the tzompantli, the skull rack on which heads were skewered for public display.
