| A new architectural feature makes its appearance in this Tollan Phase called a coatepantli or serpent wall. The Tula coatepantli is a free standing wall which does not surround the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, but simply extends along its northern side, limiting access to the main precinct. Between two friezes of geometric design a serpent devours a human skull while dismembered arms and legs are enmeshed with the serpent's body. |
