Fire had a very important ritual meaning in Mesoameria. Fire was associated with the jaguar and was seen as a destructive and creative force and was used in many rituals and ceremonies. In the back there is a large, graceful ballcourt similar to that of Copan and was situated at the heart of Xochicalco adjacent to what were probably palace chambers. Paved causeways linked groups of structures within the site. One leads down the hill to the ball court that originally had rings and is almost identical to one at Tula. The style is that of many Classic courts.
