Cacaxtla occupies the hilltop of a promontory that commands an impressive view sweeping over the Tlaxcala Valley, to the great volcanoes of Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl. The entire summit is covered by a ceremonial area of shrines, rooms, patios, staircases, passageways, altars, and a palace structure.
