The motif in the Temple of the Foliated Cross depicts the maize plant, the sustainer of life, from which sprout human heads instead of ears of corn (in the creation myth of the Popol Vuh, humans were fashioned by the gods from maize dough). The Tablet of the Foliated Cross is the sculptorial representation of the Maya myth of creation of human beings.
