The indigenous artistic form of the Maya was architectural sculpture . Architecture was programmed with symbolic information expressed in sculpture or painting. Door lintels and thrones could be carved with relief images related to the surrounding architectural imagery. This is the leg of the Palace throne, also called Del Rio throne. This piece was taken to Spain by captain Antonio del Rio as part of the "samples" of archaeological sites he gave to King Charles III.
