Following the death of the 13th ruler, 18 Rabbit, Copan entered a period of seeming dormancy - no new stelae were erected. Scholars had noted that after the placement of Stela D in 9.15.5.0.0 (AD 736), no further free-standing monuments were erected until stela M, in 9.16.5.0.0 (AD 756). This was taken by some to mean that Copan went into a decline after the loss of their distinguished ruler, and was unable to marshal public labor for monuments until nearly 20 years after his death.
