Status demanded that the basic Maya building be transformed into something more permanent, so architects rendered them in stone. In doing this they faced the difficult problem of the thatched roof and solved ít with their famed corbel or false arch, an overhead converging vault made by overlapping flat stones toward the centerline of the room, braced for safety's sake during construction by wooden crossbeams.
