The stelae of the Great Plaza emphasize the themes of fertility, solar worship, and other realms of Classic Maya religion, and this has led Claude Baudez to point out that 18 Rabbit was concerned wíth more than just conquest. He was an extremely actíve ruler, responsíble for buildíng the steps of the Great Plaza, and the erection of its seven stelae (A,B,C,D,F,H, and 4). Stela H, probably the best preserved stela at Copan, portrays 18 Rabbit in an unusual costume that combines the jaguar-skin kilt often worn by kings with a long beaded skirt usually found on images of women; it is the only portrait without sacrificial implements associated with the drawing of blood from male genitalia. The symbolíc message appears to be that Maya kíngship entaíls roles such as nurturing that míght otherw¡se be associated only with women. The text on Stela H may be a continuation of that on Stela A.
