The stelae within the Great Plaza are among the most elaborate and high-relief examples of their kind ever produced by the Classic Maya. These stelae and theír associated altars were carved during the reign of the distinguished and long-lived 13th ruler of Copán, whose hieroglyphíc name reads"18 Rabbit", though stelae in honor of two of hís ancestors were left in place on the east and west sides of the steps.
