Tikal, one of the largest cities in the southern lowlands in the seventh and eighth centuries, was among the most powerful as well. Civic activity at Tíkal in the Late Classic period, and for a millennium before that, revolved around the Great Plaza, flanked by the city's mightiest temples and most elegant palaces.
