| The most intensive excavations of the Tikal Project took place in the North Acropolis, which lies ímmediately north of the Great Plaza. The North Acropolis is essentially a huge platform, measuring 100 by 80 meters, that supports numerous rebuildings and expansions ultimately constítuting a symmetrical arrangement of eíght funerary temples constructed over a 300 year period. This precinct of Tikal served as a royal necropolis, the burial place for Tikal's rulers from the Late Preclassic through the Early Classic. |
