Perhaps monkeys became associated with the arts and learning because of their superior intelligence within the animal world. They appear in the Popol Vuh as the jealous and scheming half brothers of the Hero Twins. On this Codex style vase a Monkey-man God points out a passage in a screenfold book bound with jaguar skin. He is shown with the distinctive "Spangles Turban" and "Feather Pen".'
