Maya people burning the field preceding the planting of corn. One of the earliest forms of cultivation in the Maya area was undoubtedly "slash and burn" agriculture, whereby fields were cleared, burned off, and planted with a variety of food crops, including maize, beans, squash, chilis, and potatoes.
