| These drawings show the features which constituted the Maya ideal of beauty: artificially deformed head with sloping forehead, almond-shaped eyes, large nose, drooping lower lip, and slightly receding chin. Figures a & b from Palenque; c from Copan; d & e from Yaxchilan; f is a waterlily motif from Palenque. In the imagery surrounding the king and his nobles, costume and regalia are not only symbols of rank, wealth and prestige: they are the conduits and the instruments in which sacred power is accrued. | ||
