Mitla is one of the architectural wonders of ancient Mexico. Five groups of palace-like structures are scattered over the site, which is guarded by a fortified stronghold on a nearby hill. A colonial church is built into one of these palaces and during fiestas native Zapotec ceremonies are still carried out within its precincts, side by side with Christian rites.
