| A significant tree that bats - and only bats - pollinate is the silk-cotton, Kapok, or ceiba tree, which provides timber for native canoes and special constructions as well as soft material for many uses. Both useful and sacred in many places, it is the World Tree, connecting underworld, middleworld, and sky. Many indigenous beliefs relate to the transit of bats between the land of the living and that of the dead. The observance of bats roosting in this tree would further the belief that the anomalous, nocturnal bat had traffic with the otherworld. |
